We recently had friends over for a long awaited and greatly anticipated dinner party. They brought wines to pair with each course and made the most delicious aperitif, a Sarsaparilla Manhattan.

Ever since that appetizing evening, I have had a penchant for bourbon based cocktails, ordering a Manhattan to start the evening when out for dinner, or mixing up a Fig Old Fashioned or Elderflower Old Fashioned at home as a relaxing and delicious end to a busy evening.

FIG OLD FASHIONED

fig old fashioned

1 fig

1 1/2 ounces bourbon

1/2 ounce freshly squeezed orange juice

1/4 ounce maple syrup

1 teaspoon balsamic vinegar

Remove the stem from the fig and cut it into quarters. Place the fig pieces in the bottom of a cocktail shaker. Add the maple syrup and muddle into a paste. Add the bourbon, orange juice and balsamic vinegar, mix together then fill the shaker with ice. Shake and strain into a glass with ice.

Enjoy!
